Zafilosy and the Sacred Crocodiles

ANER-ETXEBARRIA-MADAGASCAR
He recounts the legend of how in north Madagascar, a flood submerged the town of Antagnavo beneath its waters. Only one family survived out of all its inhabitants. The rest turned into crocodiles. Zafilosy, a descendant of those who escaped the storm’s rage, now acts as the Mpijoro, the priest chosen to feed the crocodiles during a ritual in which the peasants ask the lake beasts for good fortune.

Zafilosy:

“In Antagnavo the crocodiles don’t attack people. That’s why I say they have soul. For us they are sacred. They are the guardians of the lake”.
