Yusuf and the Hyenas of Harar

ANER-ETXEBARRIA-HARAR
In the heart of Ethiopia is the city of Harar, the fourth holiest city in Islam. Hidden behind its walls a unique cohabitation takes place between its inhabitants and a fearful predator: hyenas. Known as warebas - those who clean the streets - they cross the wall every night, stealthily travelling along the pavements to the home of Yusuf, nicknamed the survivor. The man who survived a hyena attack when he was a baby, but who nowadays views them as family members.

Yusuf

“Hyenas are the animals that I love. When they die my heart breaks and I feel a deep sadness”.
